The Philosophy of the New British Realists is simple, an overriding passion for painting what they see. Every colour in their paintings has to hit the right note, singing together in a perfect tonal harmony, true to the subject portrayed. They see themselves as part of a European tradition of observational painters, going back to the Romantics, Realists, Barbizons, Impressionists, Post-impressionists, Camden Town, Euston Road School and more recently with the School of London.
A strong desire to see good paintings again was the reason why leading British painter, Nahem Shoa set up The New British Realists. Although there is a spirit of rebellion behind the forming of any serious group, theirs is only the battle of making intelligent, thought provokingly beautiful paintings. The unique teaching practice of Nahem Shoa is what has brought this group of professional painters together. They have all come from a variety of backgrounds, experiences and who are linked by an overriding passion for painting what they see.
It is the intensity of their colour work and tonal sensibility, which gives The New British Realists a unique place in the contemporary art scene. They are completely opposed to the idea of painting from photography, as it involves no element of the creative process. It is just mechanical, not dissimilar to a photocopying machine. Painting from observation is not about what you already know, but about discovering new things.
The New British Realists does not hark back to some lost romantic ideal, that has never really existed, which has produced recently many awful pseudo contemporary Renaissance style artists. Nahem Shoa has condensed the best of traditional and modernist teaching; without dogma and rules, placing the retinal experience above all else.
Colour and light has played a major role in shaping the whole ethos of modernism. By getting rid of the need for a narrative theme taken from the Greek myths or the bible stories, the world as the artist saw it became their subject matter; the notion of art for art sake was born. The mark itself and the way the image is constructed becomes the subject of the painting.
The New British Realists, are painters who all see their work as part of this kind of modernist spirit, which is edgy, open minded and uncompromising in its approach to art.
